  • Like any inflammatory problem, RICE protocol will help (Resting your leg, applying a wrapped Ice compress for 10 minutes each hour, keeping it Compressed with a tubigrip bandage, and keeping your leg Elevated).

  • Sometimes it may be necessary to refer you for further tests (e.g. ultra-sound or MRI scans) in order to rule out a more serious condition such as an aneurysm or tumour.

Can surgery help my Baker’s Cyst?

If there is significant damage to the knee joint (e.g. by osteoarthritis or a torn ligament or cartilage), then surgery may be indicated. Normally this is done as a day-case, using a keyhole procedure called an arthroscopy, which allows the surgeon to look inside the knee with a camera to identify and fix any damage. FAQ’s

Why should a patient choose Joint Replacement Surgery Hospital India?

Joint Replacement Surgery Hospital India offers highest quality bone and joint health care with attentiveness, care and compassion to meet the needs of the patients and their loved ones. The medical team includes board-certified orthopedic surgeons who are familiar with all the aspects of the musculoskeletal system. Our hospital uses the most advanced technologies available for the orthopaedic procedures and has a lower complication rate.

Why does my wrist hurt?

The bones in a joint are covered with a tough, lubricating tissue called cartilage to help provide smooth, pain-free motion to the joint. As the layer of cartilage wears away, bone begins to rub against bone, causing the irritation, swelling, stiffness, and discomfort commonly associated with arthritis.

What is a wrist replacement?

Wrist replacement surgery, also called arthroplasty, removes the damaged bone and cartilage in a joint. The bone is resurfaced with implants made from metal alloy and polyethylene (plastic) to re-create the smooth gliding surface that were once intact. The purpose of the procedure is to restore movement and decrease or eliminate pain.

How long does the typical wrist implant last?

A total joint implant’s longevity will vary from patient to patient. All implants have a limited life expectancy depending on an individual’s age, weight, activity level, and medical condition. It is important to remember that an implant is a medical device that is subject to wear, which may lead to mechanical failure. Following all of your surgeon’s recommendations after surgery may enhance longevity, there is no guarantee that your particular implant will last for any specific length of time.

Do implants fail and can they be replaced?

Since implants are mechanical devices, they are subject to conditions that can lead to mechanical failure. The most common reason for implant failure in wrist replacements is implant loosening or implant wear that leads to loosening. Implant wear particles can react with the bone, causing thinning of the bone that can lead to implant loosening. In most cases, failed implants can be revised successfully to provide good results.

When should I have joint replacement surgery?

Your surgeon will evaluate your health history, perform a physical examination, and take x-rays to decide if you are a candidate for this surgery. You must then decide if your discomfort, pain or stiffness, and overall loss of quality of life justify undergoing surgery. Generally, there is no harm in waiting to have surgery if conservative, non-surgical treatments are effective.

Is age a consideration for joint replacement?

Age is not a problem if you are in reasonably good health and have the desire to continue living a productive, active life. You may ask to see your personal physician for an opinion about your general health and readiness for surgery.

What can I expect from the surgical procedure?
  • Operation- approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours
  • Outpatient surgery
  • Rehabilitation-usually 3 to 4 months of regular exercise at home. This will vary with each patient and with each surgeon.
Where will my incision be?

The incision is usually made of the on the back of the wrist to gain access to the joint.

Will I notice anything different about my new wrist?

Yes, you may have some numbness on the outside of the scar. The area around the scar may feel warm. You may also notice some clicking when you move your wrist as a result of the artificial surfaces coming together

Are there risks from surgery?

While uncommon, complications can occur during and after surgery. Some complications include infection, blood clots, implant breakage, malalignment, and premature wear. Although implant surgery is extremely successful in most cases, some patients still experience stiffness and pain. No implant will last forever and factors such as the patient’s post-surgical activities and weight can affect longevity. Be sure to discuss these and other risks with your surgeon. There are many things that your surgeon may do to minimize the potential for complications. Your surgeon may have you see a medical physician before surgery to obtain tests. You may also need to have your dental work up to date and may be shown how to prepare your home to avoid falls.

How can I prepare for surgery?

Proper preparation and a great attitude are the best ways to accomplish a rapid recovery from joint replacement. With the help of a physical therapist, get yourself as physically fit as you can before surgery. Proper nutrition and optimal medical condition can help avoid complications. See your physician prior to surgery to ensure your blood pressure, heart, and lungs are in good shape. Be prepared to continue with your exercise program after surgery.

What type of rehabilitation can one expect following surgery?

Exercise is necessary for proper healing. Early movement is important to prevent the muscles in the wrist from becoming tight. The types of exercises you may perform are gentle, range of motion exercises designed to help restore motion to the muscles in the shoulder. As your rehabilitation continues, you may begin strengthening exercises that are designed to restore strength to your shoulder. A regular exercise program at home to promote strengthening and mobility will continue up to 12 months following surgery. It is important to follow your surgeon’s prescribed recovery outline. Do not attempt exercises that are not prescribed by your surgeon, and do not attempt to alter your exercise schedule without contacting your surgeon.

What activity range can be expected after this surgical procedure?

Although wrist replacement is designed to restore motion and decrease pain, it does not return your wrist to “normal.” Like any mechanical device, it can wear out with use. Activities like heavy lifting or manual labor can cause early wear and failure of the wrist implant. Many activities should not begin until the soft tissues around the wrist heal, which can take 3 to 6 weeks. All postoperative activities should be cleared with your surgeon.

How long until I can resume my regular activities after surgery?

Patients with total wrist replacement typically require several weeks before returning to any type of lifting or repetitive movement activities. Talk to your doctor before participating in an activity that may place excess stress or movement on your shoulder. Consult with your surgeon or therapist for advice on acceptable activities.

When will I be able to return to work?

Returning to work depends on your type of work and can be as early as 2 to 6 weeks for sedentary jobs. Returning to a job that requires significant use of the arm will usually take at least 3 months. Office workers often return in 2 to 3 weeks, while patients with more strenuous jobs may require more time away from work. The timing of your return to work depends considerably upon your commitment to recovery.

Are regular visits with your surgeon required after surgery?

The surgeon will set a follow-up schedule for the first year after surgery to evaluate your progress. Usually these follow-ups occur three, six and nine months after the surgery. Annual visits may be required thereafter. Complications can occur with implants, so seeing the surgeon when you notice a change in symptoms can assist in evaluating any changes that may occur with your new joint.

Can I choose my own hotels according to my budget?

Open Surgery: An incision is made to access tissues at the flexor tendon sheath. The sheath is cut to reach the flexor tendons. The finger is flexed to assess the cause of sticking and how it catches at the A1 pulley. The pulley is cut and released after nearby tissues are pulled away. As the pulley is released, flexor tendons are pulled back and forth to confirm that they are gliding smoothly without facing any obstacle. Once confirmed, the incision is closed and bandage is applied. The entire procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

Percutaneous Trigger Finger Surgery: This surgical procedure is minimally invasive and performed through the skin without an open incision. Surgeons use a needle as a scalpel. The needle is inserted at the A1 pulley position. It is moved back and forth to cut the ligament. Once the surgery is done, it is taken out and the area is bandaged. The percutaneous trigger finger surgery is usually done under local anesthesia. It does create any incision and there is no need for healing. However, the procedure has its limitations. Its use is restricted to less serious conditions, as it may not be able to cut the more stiffened sheath and successfully release the pulley. The procedure may also cause damage to tendons or nerves.

How long does trigger finger surgery take?

The procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

Do I need to stay at the hospital after trigger finger surgery?

The surgery is an outpatient procedure and patients are discharged within an hour.

Do I need rest after trigger finger surgery?

Patients require rest for one or two days after surgery to avoid any infection. Pain, swelling, and soreness return after the anesthesia wears off. Medication and therapy helps overcome these temporary surgical effects.

What are the restrictions following trigger finger surgery?
  • Keep the bandage clean and dry.
  • No driving for a week.
  • Avoid grasping or pinching for 2 weeks.
  • Keep your hand in a elevated position for 3 to 5 days to reduce swelling.
  • Limit activities with the hand for 6 weeks
  • No heavy lifting or repeated finger movements for 2 weeks.
What kind of rehabilitation is needed following trigger finger surgery?
  • Trigger finger surgery does not require lengthy rehabilitation. You can start finger movements from day one to overcome stiffness and also do soft massaging. Limit the finger and hand exercises to your tolerance level and avoid repeated finger movements for 2 weeks. Press softball and open and close your hand several times a day for 3 weeks.

How long is the recovery period following trigger finger surgery?

The finger and palm recover significantly in a week and gets better gradually. However, patients have to wait for 2 to 3 months to regain full finger strength. They can return to sedentary jobs after 3-4 days. But it is advised to have a 6-week break for jobs requiring repeated finger use, high-strength grasping, or hand vibration. Patients can start using keyboards or drive without pain after a week and play racquet sports in 3 weeks. They can join manual labor after 3-4 weeks. All stiffness goes in 6 months assuring complete recovery.

Can Non-Tennis Players Get Tennis Elbow?

If you or someone you love have the symptoms of this condition but are not a tennis player, that is not necessarily a reason to dismiss the possibility of tennis elbow. The condition gets its name because the muscle group involved, the wrist extensors, are at work during the common tennis motions of cocking the wrist back and stabilizing it while gripping a racquet. However, other sports or even jobs which require repetitive motions in the wrist and arm may lead to this condition. Common careers affected by this condition include plumbers, painters, carpenters, and butchers.

What Are The Symptoms of Lateral Epicondylitis?

There are specific areas and instances of pain which are most commonly associated with tennis elbow. The pain will often radiate from the outside of the elbow, into the forearm and wrist. The pain and weakness resulting from this condition may make it difficult to shake hands, turn a doorknob, or even hold a full cup of coffee. If you continue to experience pain and tenderness matching this condition, and it is not resolved with rest or ice, it may be time to contact a doctor.

How Is It Diagnosed?

When you visit your doctor, she or he will typically begin with a physical exam, asking you to move your arm and wrist in various ways. Your doctor will also ask questions about your medical and activity history. In many cases, this combination is enough to offer a diagnosis of tennis elbow. However, in certain cases, an X-ray may be used to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms.

How Is This Condition Often Treated?

For over 90% of patients, non-operative treatment is successful to address the pain and weakness of tennis elbow. These options typically include a combination of the following:

  • Lifestyle modification (including technique adjustments and rest)
  • Changing Stroke Mechanics and Racquet (in cases of regular tennis players)
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications (these can be used to control pain and inflammation)
  • Cortisone Injections (these can reduce pain in the case that more conservative methods fail)
  • Elbow Braces (these can help to reduce the use of the injured muscles during healing)
  • Exercise (strengthening the related muscles can help to prevent re-injury)

In most cases, some combination of the above treatment options, guided by a sports medicine physician, can be effective to treat tennis elbow.

In very rare cases, however, a surgical treatment approach may be necessary. Lateral epicondylitis surgery involves the removal of the damaged tendon and repair of the remaining tendon to the bone. This surgical procedure is usually successful, although it is rarely needed.

The medical team includes board-certified orthopedic surgeons who are familiar with all the aspects of the musculoskeletal system. Our hospital uses the most advanced technologies available for the orthopaedic procedures and has a lower complication rate.

What is Dupuytren’s disease?

The signs of this disease are shown by what looks like scarring on the palms of your hands and the fingers. Fingers curling towards the palms happens when the fibrous connective tissue in the palms has thickened. This condition is known as Dupuytren’s Contracture.

What are the benefits of surgery?

Surgery not only straightens the fingers but also makes using your hand easier.

What will happen during the operation?

This procedure may be performed to different degrees: cutting the fibrous band in your palm or taking away the scarred skin and covering the area with skin grafts. The are a number of anaesthetic procedures available for this operation.

Are there any Risks and complications?

Any risks or complications will be discussed in advance of your treatment with your expert consultant.

What to expect with recovery post surgery?
  • No overnight stay.
  • Regular exercise of your hand and fingers will help recovery and get your hand back to normal more quickly, however, all exercise should be approved by your doctor first.
  • Your hand may take a little time to feel normal after surgery.
What Are the Symptoms of Dupuytren’s Contracture?
  • Symptoms of the disease start slowly. The first symptoms include firm nodules or bumps that form on the palm of the hand. Here’s what else you should know:
  • Nodules may be tender at first, but they can become less painful as the disease progresses.
  • Over time, thick bands of tissue form beneath the skin of the palm.
  • In more severe cases, the fingers, especially the last two fingers, curl down into the palm and can’t be straightened.
  • Symptoms can involve one or both hands and can range from just nodules to complete contraction of all the fingers.
Who Is at Risk for Dupuytren’s Contracture?

Doctors do not know why the fascia in the palm of the hand becomes abnormal in people with Dupuytren’s contracture, but it tends to run in families. Here’s what else you should know:

  • The disease rarely starts before age 40, but becomes more common with increasing age.
  • People whose ancestors are from Scandinavia or other areas in northern Europe are at the highest risk. Two-thirds of men who are related to people with Depuytren’s contracture develop the condition. Having diabetes is another risk factor.
  • Men may be at as much as 15 times greater risk than women. However, because women tend to get a milder form of the disease, they may simply not be diagnosed as often as men.
  • Although drinking alcohol and cigarettes have both been linked to Dupuytren’s in a few studies, altering habits does not appear to modify the disease.

One factor that does not seem to increase your risk is working with your hands or having a hand injury.

How Serious is Dupuytren’s Contracture?

Dupuytren’s contracture is not a life-threatening disease. Those with a milder form of the disease experience few limitations. For some people, the disease never progresses beyond the nodule stage. The disease comes on slowly, but if symptoms start at an early age, it may progress more quickly. The progressive form may end with one or both of hands frozen in a claw-like deformity, making it hard to grip or grasp, wear gloves, or even put your hand in your pocket.

What Should You Do If You’re Diagnosed With Dupuytren’s Contracture?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease and there is nothing you can do to stop its progression. Hand exercises may be helpful if you have a mild form of the disease or if you are recovering from surgery. However, in some cases, trying to stretch your hands or exercise your fingers may actually make the disease progress more quickly. Because every person is unique, check with your doctor to see what can help you manage this disease. If you have a milder form, you may experience few limitations. If the disease progresses to cause your hand to become deformed, you may need to see a hand specialist for treatment.

What Treatment Options Are Available?

Treatment can slow down Dupuytren’s and may relieve some of the deformity that has already set in. Treatment options include:

  • Steroid injections into the hand to relieve painful nodules
  • Enzyme injections into the palm to break up thickened fascia
  • Needle aponeurotomy where a needle is inserted through the palm of the hand to break up the fascia during this in-office procedure (recurrences are common)
  • A reconstructive type of open hand surgery called fasciectomy/fasciotomy to remove or split the thickened fascia (recurrence rate is variable and based on multiple factors)
What Happens After Treatment?

Surgical procedures help most people regain some movement in their fingers, but the contracture comes back in about 20% of people. After treatment, a splint may be used to keep the hand in the best position to heal. Physical therapy may be started with massage and strengthening exercises.

What is the Oxford Knee?

The Oxford knee is an artificial joint utilizing the mobile bearing system.

Is the oxford procedure acceptable when you have osteonecrosis in the knee?

The Oxford procedure can be very successful for treatment of osteonecrosis of the knee, as this process typically destroys a very limited area of the knee. Replacing this with a partial knee replacement, with the remaining knee structures intact, is often one of the best strategies for treatment

What is the best knee replacement option?

The Oxford knee appears to have the best track record. If you follow the links on my website, information regarding statistics and studies can be found on the Oxford website.

Has a partial replacement got the same life expectancy as a full replacement? And based on this, would you opt for a partial or full replacement?

An Oxford medial unicompartmental knee replacement has been shown to have over 95% survival of the implant at 10 years, if appropriate screening was done prior to the surgery. “Screening” means that it was ascertained that the lateral compartment was preserved and that the cruciate ligaments were intact. This compares to the best total knee results. Furthermore, it appears that if a revision is necessary, i.e. in the 5% of patients that develop a problem during the first 10 years, taking a unicompartmental knee replacement out and replacing it with a total knee replacement is less of an operation and has better results than taking a total knee replacement being replaced by another total knee replacement.

Therefore, the strategy utilizing a smaller prosthesis, i.e. unicompartmental knee replacement, as the first procedure, is predicted to give similar outcomes and better revision options than using a total knee replacement as the first procedure. It minimizes “burning your bridges”.

 Faq

What is a Cervical Laminoplasty?

A cervical Laminoplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the cervical (neck) region of the spine to help relieve the painful pressure of spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is the gradual narrowing of the spinal canal, usually caused by arthritis, bone spurs, or the general wear and tear on the spine that occurs over time. A cervical Laminoplasty creates more space in the canal for the spinal cord and nerve roots, releasing the pressure and eliminating discomfort and numbness, while avoiding fusion and maintaining motion.

Who is a Candidate for a Cervical Laminoplasty?

Frequent pain and/or numbness in the neck or down the arms are often an indication of spinal stenosis. However, other factors can cause the spinal canal to narrow. Bony growths (spurs) can constrict the pathways through which the nerves must travel. In addition, some people are born with a narrow spinal canal that becomes symptomatic as they age. The narrowing of the spinal canal may eventually cause pressure on the nerves and nerve roots that emerge from the spinal column. This irritation can result in pain and numbness, particularly after sitting or standing for extended lengths of time. A cervical Laminoplasty may be recommended in order to make more room for the nerves or nerve roots.

What are the Alternatives to a Cervical Laminoplasty?

Surgery is usually the last option considered. If your symptoms are mild, you may not require any treatment at all. Other conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, and steroid injections may relieve symptoms for a time; however, they usually do not permanently change the underlying cause of the problem—the narrowing of the spinal canal. In some cases, a cervical Laminoplasty may be the best solution to remove irritation and create more space for the nerves.

How are Back & Neck Problems Evaluated?

Your doctor will use a number of approaches to evaluate and diagnose neck problems such as a herniated disc. These include:

A Detailed History – Your role in providing a detailed history is very important. Your doctor will need to know where and when it hurts, if there was a recent injury or fall, and a description of the pain. Are there positions or activities that make it feel worse? What makes it feel better? All of these details can help your doctor pinpoint the problem.

A Physical Exam – Once your history is given, a thorough exam by a spine expert is another important step in getting a good diagnosis.

Diagnostic Imaging – X rays can show the structure and alignment of the vertebrae, as well as the presence and size of bone spurs or other bony abnormalities.

CT or “computerized tomography” – This is a special kind of X ray machine. Rather than a single X ray, a CT scanner sends out a number of beams at different angles. These images are then read by a computer, producing detailed cross-sections or “slices” that can show the shape and size of the spinal canal and the surrounding structures.

MRI or “magnetic resonance imaging” – MRI is probably the most utilized study for disc evaluation. MRI uses a powerful magnet and radio waves. The images produced are very helpful in visualizing the soft tissues such as the spinal cord, as well as the discs and nerve roots.

Bone Scans – These are useful in revealing certain abnormalities such as infections, fractures, tumors and arthritis. Because bone scans are unable to differentiate between these problems, they are usually performed in conjunction with other diagnostic tests.

How Long is the Hospital Stay?

The time spent in the hospital after a cervical Laminoplasty depends on several factors, including your overall health and the extent of your particular surgery. Some people may be able to return home the next day while others may spend two to three days in the hospital.

How Long Will it Take to Recover?

The recovery time after a cervical Laminoplasty varies depending on your particular situation, the number of levels involved, and your general health. The key to a successful recovery is maintaining a positive attitude. You will be able to take short walks while in the hospital, and you should gradually increase the distance and frequency of your walks once at home. You may be asked to wear a neck brace after initial surgery. Physical therapy may be needed after cervical Laminoplasty. Your doctor will give you specific instructions on activity levels, including when you can resume driving and return to work.
